Closet Organization: Where Will it Lead You?

Making a Change

Would you like a more orderly life? Do you want to stop searching every morning for that one accessory item that has seemingly disappeared? Then, maybe it’s time you got serious about closet organization. Organizing you clothes, shoes and accessories so you can easily find them will lessen the stress in your life and boost your confidence. If you go online, you can find a number of closet organization systems that can be customized or sized for your closet and storage needs.

Donate What you Don’t Need or Wear

Besides taking the dimensions of the closet you want to rehab, you’ll need to get rid of the clothing and shoes you no longer need. Be resolute if not ruthless about getting rid of anything you haven’t worn or are not planning to wear in the near future. It’s better to donate the clothing you don’t wear to a charity than allow it to continue gathering dust in your closet.

Store Out-of-Season Clothing

If you’re limited with respect to closet space, store out-of-season clothes in boxes that go under the bed. It’s more prudent to spend time, as needed, stashing away the seasonal clothes you currently can’t wear than trying to cram every piece of clothing you own into the closet. Therefore, make sure that your closets only contain those clothing items you presently need.

Do It Yourself and Save

If you’ve received an estimate from a closet organizer company, compare their cost with doing it yourself. Doing it yourself will reduce what you’ll pay for labor; however, you’ll still need to include any special equipment you’ll need to install an organizer closet system yourself. In most cases, though, a minimum of tools are needed. For instance, a wire closet organizer can be assembled without tools and offers rods to hang your clothes and racks and shelving to place shoes and sweaters. Therefore, once you determine the size of your closet, you can significantly reduce the amount you spend by finding an organizer online.

Appropriate Enough Space

Organizing your closet also involves the spacing of your clothes once you have an organizational system in place. To prevent the problem of crowding, you’ll want to allow at least an inch of horizontal space per garment and from two to three inches of horizontal space for bulkier garments such as coats or jackets. Therefore, once you separate your clothes in like groupings, such as pants, skirts, shirts, and jackets, you can hang them accordingly. For instance, 12 shirts would occupy about 12 inches of horizontal space while 6 jackets would occupy about 12 to 18 inches of horizontal space.

Creative Space Planning

Needless to say, it’s imperative that you make good use of the space you have available in your closet. For instance, see if your closet can hold a main closet rod at a high enough height to also include another rod directly beneath it. The second rod should be installed about 3 feet from the floor and could be used for clothing items such as pants or shirts. In addition, plan on installing your clothes rods about a foot from the back wall of the closet in order to keep clothes from getting crushed. Allow about 3 to 4 inches for closet rods that are hung under shelves for easy retrieval of clothes.
